Wamiqa Gabbi's Perspective on Mixed Reviews
Wamiqa Gabbi's recent film, Bhool Chuk Maaf, has received a variety of reviews. Despite being a favorite among critics, her portrayal in the film has not resonated with everyone. However, the talented actress remains unfazed, stating, "Everyone has their own opinion, and there’s no universal standard for books, films, or performances."
Regardless of the critics, Bhool Chuk Maaf is performing well at the box office, and Wamiqa has been touched by the support from her hometown. Just before her departure from Chandigarh, she expressed that those who witness your journey often feel more connected to your struggles and triumphs. Discussing her role as a small-town girl, she noted, "Some characters are not overly intellectual; they exist in their own happy worlds, embodying purity and innocence." She added, "For those who find Titli frustrating, I assure you, girls like her do exist. Perhaps those in Bandra might not relate to her straightforwardness and sincerity."
To better understand her character, Wamiqa draws inspiration from influencer Dharna Durga, whose relatable content often depicts everyday couple dynamics. She remarked, "Every character I portray is distinct. While I’ve played more sophisticated roles in Khufiya and Charlie Chopra & The Mystery of Solang Valley, not everyone is as aware of the world around them." Her interpretation of her character aligned perfectly with the vision of writer-director Karan Sharma. When asked about working with a debut director after collaborating with industry veterans like Vishal Bhardwaj and Vikramaditya Motwane, she confidently replied, "Wasn’t I a newcomer to them once?"
In Bhool Chuk Maaf, Wamiqa shares the screen with the immensely talented Rajkummar Rao. She commended not only his acting skills but also his humility, stating, "He’s a major star yet remains down-to-earth, making everyone feel at ease and even offering cues during scenes."
Having just completed filming for Priyadarshan’s Bhoot Bangla, Wamiqa described working alongside superstar Akshay Kumar as a fantastic experience. She shared a fun tidbit, saying, "We communicated in Punjabi except during action and cut!" Language barriers do not hinder her, as she is set to begin shooting for the Telugu film G2, an action spy thriller directed by Vinay Kumar Sirigineedi. When asked what makes the South Indian film industry special, she emphasized the importance of a compelling story, which is her primary consideration when choosing projects. Wamiqa is selective, often turning down numerous offers from both Hindi and South Indian cinema, and she hasn’t found anything exciting in Punjabi films lately. When questioned about the key to thriving in the industry, she simply stated, "Patience."
Wamiqa is eager to embark on new projects, with the fantasy action series Rakt Brahmand: The Bloody Kingdom, directed by the renowned duo Raj and DK, set to begin filming in August. Unlike her character Titli, she currently has no plans for marriage. She reassured that her parents, particularly her father, an artist himself, do not impose traditional expectations on her. "My dad has always encouraged my independence, allowing me to be myself without pressure. I owe my identity to him," she expressed.
Reflecting on her childhood, she fondly remembers the carefree days spent at her grandfather’s house in Pathankot, enjoying mangoes straight from the trees. "Those were truly magical, stress-free times," she reminisced. Today, she feels no pressure regarding her film's success, stating, "You give your best, and then it’s all about fate." Clearly, the winds of destiny are currently blowing in her favor.
