Nigeria flood: The number of people who died due to heavy rains in the central state of Nigeria Niger in Nigeria has increased to at least 151. According to reports, Ibrahim Hussaini, spokesperson of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, said that more than 50 bodies were recovered in the Mokwa area where the disaster took place on Saturday. Hussaini said that 11 injured people were rescued and sent to the nearest hospital. “So far, 318 people have been affected, and at least 503 houses have also been affected.” He said that the search for bodies is going on, local divers and volunteers are assisting in rescue operations.
Hussaini told reporters on Thursday that heavy rains late on Wednesday night caused havoc in Mokwa, causing many houses submerged and swept away, some of which were still inside. Earlier this week, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency issued warnings of thunderstorms and heavy rain in the central region of the country including Niger. More rainfall is expected in the next 24 hours, as well as rains in the southern region.
