A stunning African island has been dubbed a "mini "thanks to its beautiful beaches and incredible temperatures all year round. Djerba is a Tunisian island and the largest island in North , at 198 square miles. It is in the Gulf of Gabès, off the coast near the Libyan border.

- often compared to the Caribbean by people who have visited - is speculated to have been the island of the lotus-eaters where Odysseus was stranded on his voyage through the Mediterranean Sea. When Odysseus' men tasted the lotus, they lost all desire to return home and only wanted to stay on the island. In the Greek era, it was known as the island of Lytos. One of its villages could be located from the Qantara Tower, and the name Djerba was given to the area near Houmt Souk.

Citing its long and unique history, Tunisia has sought UNESCO World Heritage status protections for the island, and, in 2023, Djerba was officially designated a World Heritage Site. The town of Houmt Souk, the island's capital, features traditional white-washed buildings, lively markets, and historic mosques.

Some key sights to behold include the beautiful ancient Orthodox Jewish El Ghriba Synagogue, located in the Jewish village of Hara Seghira (er-Riadh), several miles southwest of Houmt El Souk, the main town of Djerba. Besides being the centre of the island's Jewish life, the synagogue is also a Jewish site of pilgrimage.

The island is also famous for its handmade pottery, woven carpets, and silver jewellery. Visitors can explore the bustling souks (markets) in Houmt Souk to buy local crafts, spices, and textiles.

Djerba Explore is a complex of three museums and a crocodile farm in the heart of the tourist area of Midoun, at the foot of the Tourgueness lighthouse. It is said to be home to about 800 crocodiles and is a highly rated attraction on Tripadvisor.

Renowned for its pristine condition, the island has white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, making it a prime location for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

Travel blog said that the location should be popped straight onto your bucket list: "You've probably have never heard of this place and it's likely that Tunisia is not a country on the top of your bucket list, but I'm about to change that for you in this travel guide!

"Djerba is a small haven for turquoise beaches, charming villages, a touch of history and lots of delicious food! This island is perfect for a short weekend getaway or a week-long retreat."
