It's not often that you see a team lose after scoring five centuries in a match, but India suffered that fate. They lost the 1st Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, by 5 wickets. India could not put a stop to England’s scoring opportunities as the hosts successfully neutralised the threat of Jasprit Bumrah, who went wicketless - a crucial blow to India's hopes. The rest of the bowling attack, coupled with sloppy fielding, only made matters worse.
While many players and the team as a whole have faced criticism for the defeat, one man who has also become a target of online hate is India's current head coach, Gautam Gambhir. He has been criticised for India's poor performances in Test cricket over the past few months - particularly since taking over the role of head coach.

Gautam Gambhir criticised Ravi Shastri in the past - now faces the heat
"What goes around comes around!" — the phrase rings true as Gautam Gambhir, now India's head coach, finds himself under fire. Years ago, during his time away from BCCI duties, Gambhir had openly criticised then-head coach Ravi Shastri, questioning his credentials and leadership.
Under Shastri, India became the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia (2018–19) and repeated the feat with a second-string side three years later. Though India didn't win an ICC trophy during his tenure, they were dominant in Tests, losing just two matches at home. Shastri stepped down after the 2021 T20 World Cup and moved into commentary.

Now, as fans scrutinise Gambhir's coaching style, an old interview with News18 has resurfaced. In it, he said: "I don't know what Shastri has achieved apart from winning the World Championship in Australia. Even if you win 4-1, you stay humble and say you want to keep improving. Calling it the best Indian team overseas — that's childish. I didn't take it seriously; it was an immature statement."
Fans now criticise Gautam GambhirSoon after India's loss, fans took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to speak about him and how India's form in Test cricket has only gone down. One said, "1 win in last 9 tests @GautamGambhir," posting a picture of Gambhir's criticism of Shastri.

They are the ones who should be held responsible for back-to-back poor performances in Tests - be it NZ, Aus, or now in Eng. And these MFs should be called out now."

Under Gambhir we have not performed well in Test matches.
One stated, "The BCCI's decision to appoint Gautam Gambhir as coach was their biggest mistake. Everything that's happened since then has just confirmed it."

IND vs ENG
England's stunning 371-run chase in the opening Test has put pressure on the young Indian side, who will now look to regroup and level the five-match series. The second Test is set for July 2 at Edgbaston in Birmingham, giving both teams a week-long breather before the next clash.
