Highway Toll Tax News: Toll tax reduced by 50 percent on national highway, government issued notification
Highway toll tax news: The government has taken a big decision. The toll on national highways has been reduced by 50 percent. The government has directly reduced the toll rate for those parts of national highways, which have structures such as tunnels, bridges, flyovers or elevated sections. This step will reduce the cost of travel to drivers.
The user charge on toll plazas on national highways is levied as per NH fee rules, 2008. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has amended the rules and notified a new formula to calculate the toll fee. The Ministry has given examples to explain the new toll fee.
Let’s understand with an example
An example suggests that if the total length of a section of the national highway is 40 km, which includes only the structure, the minimum length will be calculated as follows: ’10 x 40 (ten times the length of the structure) = 400 km or 400 km or five times the total length of a section of the national highway = 5 x 40 = 200 km ‘. The structure here means an independent bridge, tunnel or flyover or an elevated highway.
This is how the fee will be half
User fees will be calculated not for 400 km but for short distance. In this case, the user fee will be applicable only for half (50 percent) length of the road. According to the current rules, users have to pay 10 times regular tolls for every kilometer on national highways.
A senior official of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that the existing toll calculation method is used to compensate the high construction costs associated with such basic facilities. The official said that the notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has cut toll rates for 50 per cent for segments like flyover, underpass and tunnel.
