Wearing glasses has become a common problem for people, especially after the age of 40 years. But now science has stepped in a direction that can end the era of glasses. Recently, in a study presented at the European Society of Cataract and Refacitive Surgeons (ESCRS) meeting, scientists have revealed special eye drops, which can prove to be a game changer for people struggling with vision problems.

This study was conducted on those in which a disease called ‘Pressbayopia’ is found. Pressbayopia is a type of long vision defect that is usually seen in people aged 40 years or older. In this problem, the lens of the eye loses its elasticity, which makes it difficult to see the things nearby. It is currently treated with glasses or surgery, but wearing glasses is inconvenient for many people and surgery is not financially possible for everyone. In such a situation, these new eye drops can become an alternative to an inexpensive, simple and effective medicine.

What happened in research?

According to The Guardian report, a total of 766 participants were included in this research. All of them used I drops twice a day – waking up in the morning and about six hours later. The drops had a mixture of two main medicines – pilocarpine and diclofenac. All participants were given equal amounts of diclofenac, while the amount of pilocarpine was divided into three groups separately – 1%, 2%and 3%.

To see the effect of the drops, the vision of the participants was tested by the Jaeger eye chart. The study found that the improvement of 3.45 lines was observed on an average in the eyes of patients only one hour after using the drops.

Dr. Jio -Geoana Benojji, who is the director of the Center for Advanced Research for Pressbayopia at Buenos Aires, said, “The most important result of our study was that all three groups saw a sharp and permanent improvement in the passing of the pass. Especially in one percent of the Pillocarpin group, 99% of the patients were able to read two or more additional lines.”

At the same time, 69% of the participants in the group with two percent Pilocarpin could read three or more additional lines, while in the group with three percent Pilocarpin, 84% of the participants were able to read three or more additional lines.

Safe and effective treatment

However, some temporary side effects were seen from the use of drops such as – blurred vision, eye irritation and headache. But researchers say that these problems were transient and gradually recovered after treatment. The study made it clear that eye drops are not only safe but are also an effective and easily tolerated treatment option for vision improvement.

Dr. Benojji says that this method can prove to be a boon for those who are troubled by glasses or are unable to undergo surgery. He said, “We found that the improvement in vision with this treatment remained permanently for two years.”

Experts response

The findings of this research have been welcomed by experts. However, he also said that the effectiveness and safety of this treatment requires a broad, long-term and multi-centered study. Many experts have suggested that more research is needed about prolonged protection of drugs, especially the effects on the eyes. Dr. Jiovana said, “This study is promising but we will collect more data in this direction so that it can be implemented worldwide.”

Will glasses become history soon?

This research is a big step in the direction of science that can improve lifestyle. This is the news of relief for millions of people struggling with Pressbayopia. If further studies are also positive, then it is possible that in the coming years, take eye drops instead of glasses. However, experts have also warned that treatment cannot have a similar effect on every person and it will be necessary to consult a doctor before adopting it.

These new eye drops can prove to be a revolutionary step of therapy. While glasses and surgery are the main means of treatment at the present time, these drops can become simple, affordable and safe options. The positive results in vision improvement have raised a ray of hope. Scientists are doing more research right now, but in the future it is possible that the need for glasses to see pass is over.

This discovery can provide relief to those who are struggling with eye problems with age and modern medical science has moved towards a new era.
