Malaysia ranked third and Indonesia 4th in a list of 10 cheapest countries for digital nomads, according to a report from Global Citizen Solutions, a firm that specializes in residency and citizenship by investment.
The company analyzed the cost of living, the cost of co-working, the cost of a hot desk and digital nomad visa programs in 64 different countries to determine its list. Factors taken into account included housing, groceries, transportation, and other essential living costs.
Malaysia started offering a digital nomad visa program in October 2022 in an effort to attract remote workers from around the world.
To be eligible for the visa, applicants are required to have an annual income of at least US$24,000.
Indonesia launched a remote work visa program in October 2022 that allows eligible foreigners to stay in the country for either five or 10 years.
Visa applicants are required to have proof of funds of at least 2 billion Indonesia rupiahs, or $130,000, in their bank account. They also must have a passport valid for at least 36 months and include a résumé in their application.
India was named the cheapest destination for digital nomads, followed by Ecuador.
