Tuberculosis, or TB, is an infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs but can also spread to other parts of the body. It is caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis and spreads from one person to another through coughing, sneezing, or saliva. If left untreated, it can even become life-threatening. Let’s understand the causes and how to prevent it by doing these 5 important things on time
1. Recognize the Symptoms and Don’t Ignore Them
A cough that lasts more than two weeks, blood in the sputum, sudden weight loss, night sweats, and persistent fever are the main symptoms of TB. If you experience any of these, consult a doctor immediately.
2. Get Tested on TimeIf you suspect TB, undergo essential tests like contact tracing, CB-NAAT test, X-ray, and blood tests. Treatment should be started as soon as TB is confirmed.
3. Take Proper and Complete Treatment TB treatment lasts for 6 to 9 months and is available free of cost in government hospitals. Do not stop taking the medication midway, as this can lead to drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), which is harder to treat.
4. Prevent the Spread of InfectionTB patients should wear a mask, avoid crowded places, and dispose of sputum safely. Ensure proper ventilation in the house and maintain hygiene to prevent the spread of infection.
5. Maintain a Healthy DietA strong immune system is essential to fight TB. Eat a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Get enough sleep and manage stress effectively.
TB is a completely curable disease if diagnosed and treated on time. Stay aware, get tested when needed, and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
