A railway journey in Wales spanning fewer than 10 miles has been recognised as amongst the finest attractions globally. The Brecon Mountain Railway, hailed as "one of Wales' most breathtaking heritage attractions", has secured its place within the top 10 per cent of visitor experiences worldwide according to Tripadvisor's 2025 Travellers' Choice Awards.

These accolades are determined by reviews and ratings provided by Tripadvisor users throughout a 12-month period, with only an exclusive selection of experiences achieving such distinction annually. Situated on the fringes of Bannau Brycheiniog, the narrow-gauge steam railway delivers spectacular vistas from observation carriages spanning some of Wales' most scenic terrain. The route, operating between Pant and Torpantau, traces part of the former Brecon and Merthyr Railway which ceased operations over six decades ago.

Whilst the excursion transports passengers on merely a 9.5 mile return journey, within this brief distance the locomotive ventures into Bannau Brycheiniog, passes through Pontsticill and travels the entire length of the Taf Fechan Reservoir. The train then ascends to Torpantau deep within the national park and reaches the peak of the original route, reports Wales Online.

Boasting a Tripadvisor rating of 4.2 out of 5 based on over 1,600 tourist reviews, the experience has been described as "absolutely amazing" by a recent visitor. They enthused: "It was great to go on the steam train up to the mountains with lovely views of the scenery."

Another satisfied customer noted: "A very clean, dog friendly experience. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. The views are amazing and the smells of the steam engine brought back childhood memories."

One local resident, who only recently discovered the railway despite living nearby for years, shared: "Although I've known about the railway and lived a short distance away for many years I'd never visited until this summer.

"We went with our children (aged six to 11) and their grandmother. It was a brilliant day out. There are things to do and see at the start and the midway point (before it turns back). The train is amazing and kids loved the sights and sounds, especially getting to stand on the outside as it moved along.

"Being able to split your journey and come back on a later train with a walk in between would have been even better and we'll do that when they're a little older. It was good value for money and it was enjoyed by all of us."

Stuart Williams, the railway's general manager, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating: "This award is especially meaningful because it comes directly from our visitors,".

"We are proud that people choose to travel from across the UK and beyond to experience the railway, and it's thanks to the passion and dedication of our team that we're able to create such lasting memories.

"Every journey is about much more than the destination - it's about the magic of steam, the history, and the spectacular landscapes that make this part of Wales so special."
