New vehicle purchase policy: The Maharashtra government has implemented a new policy for government officials regarding vehicle purchase, which has become effective since 17 September 2025. According to the mandate (GR) issued by the Finance Department, no price limit will be applicable to the officers posted in top posts like Governor, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Chief Justice of High Court. This means that these officers will be able to buy a vehicle of any price according to their choice and requirement.

The government has explained the main reason for the change in this policy, the increasing production cost of vehicles, inflation and technical changes coming in new models with BS-6 standard. Along with this, the price limit of the vehicle has also been fixed for other category officials according to different posts.

12 lakhs limit for other officers

According to the new policy, Cabinet Minister and Chief Secretary up to Rs 30 lakh, Additional Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary up to Rs 25 lakh, while State Information Commissioner and members of Maharashtra Public Service Commission will be able to buy vehicles up to Rs 20 lakh. This limit has been fixed at Rs 17 lakh for the Head of Department and Division Commissioner and Rs 15 lakh for District Collector, Commissioner of Police and Superintendent of Police. At the same time, a limit of Rs 12 lakh has been kept for other officials who get the approval of the State Level Vehicle Review Committee.

In this policy, the method of calculating the price is also clarified. Now the price of the vehicle will be decided only on the basis of its base price, which will not include additional costs like GST, motor vehicle tax and registration fee. A special objective of the policy is also to promote electric vehicles (EVs). Under this, officers will be able to buy electric vehicles up to 20 percent more than their fixed limit, which will encourage EV.

Apart from this, for field officers associated with disaster management, the option of purchasing multi-utility vehicle (MUV) has also been given, the maximum limit of which will be Rs 12 lakh. The government believes that this will better face the challenges coming in field duty.

More freedom to choose a vehicle

Overall, this new vehicle procurement policy of the Government of Maharashtra gives officers more freedom to choose the vehicle according to their responsibilities and needs. Also, it is considered an important step towards technical changes and promoting environment-friendly vehicles.
