A Michelin-starred chef has announced the closure of a popular restaurant after more than a decade, as locals and fellow chefs lamented its departure. Thompson, which is owned and run by chef and restauranteur Phil Thompson, was established in St Albans in 2013.

Prior to the restaurant's arrival in the town, Phil had built his reputation over a long career behind the stove, and was part of a team that won a Michelin star at The Orrery in London. He achieved a second at Auberge du Lac at Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire, were he rose to become its executive head chef.

Phil then fulfilled his long-held ambition of having his own place.

But this week, he announced in a post on Instagram that the establishment would soon be serving customers for the last time.

He wrote: "It is with great sadness that after 12 years, we will be closing the doors to Thompson St Albans. On behalf of myself and the team, I would like to thank everyone who supported and grew with us over the past 12 years.

"Our regulars became part of the Thompson family, which meant the world. To all our staff past and present, thank you for all your hard work.

"It wasn't always easy, but you truly made THOMPSON St Albans a chapter in my life that I will always be very proud to remember. Warmest regards, Phil."

Comments voicing sadness at the restraurant's departure flooded in from fellow cooks and fans of the establishment, with one person writing: "So sorry to hear this Phil, a big loss for St Albans and us all but excited to see more about your personal chef experiences!"

Another said they were also sorry to hear the news, adding, "congrats on 12 years, had some superb visits over that time".

Fellow Michelin-starred chef Paul Ainsworth voiced his admiration for Phil and the restaurant, saying 12 years is "phenomenal" and that he and the team should be "very proud".

Chris Galvin, a former colleague at the Orrery who is now Chef Patron at Galvin Restaurants, wrote: "Congratulations on a fantastic Innings Phil. 'Better to have love and lost than never to have loved at all'.

"You created untold amount of special memories for your guests and taught so many young chefs," he said, adding: "We are super proud of you Phil."

The final night will be Saturday, October 18, when customers will be served up a special seven-course "closing menu".

Phil also shared the announcement on beloved local dining spot's website, adding: "It's farewell, but not goodbye.... I have already had the pleasure of cooking in the homes of some of our guests as their personal chef for the evening.

"Please book me for your special event, and I look forward to seeing you again very soon!"
