There is a popular story related to Yama Deepdan which is as follows - 'Once Yamraj asked his messengers of Yam, 'You take the lives of people every day, have you never felt pity on anyone?'
Yamdoot said, 'On earth there was a handsome prince named Hem. After looking at the horoscope, the astrologers came to know that whenever this child gets married, he will die after 4 days.
'Because of this fear, his father raised him by keeping him in a cave far away from everyone. One day, while wandering, King Hans's daughter reached that cave. The prince was fascinated after seeing her and both of them got married to Gandharva.
'Prince Hem died on the fourth day of the marriage. Seeing her husband's death, his newly married wife started crying loudly. We were very sad when that prince took his life.
Then Yamraj said, 'If someone donates a lamp for me on the evening of Dhan Trayodashi, then he and none of his family will have to fear untimely death.' Since then the tradition of donating lamps for Yamraj on Dhanteras is going on.
