Indian women’s cricket team created history by winning the ODI World Cup. After the victory, there were tears of joy in the eyes of the players, because this was the moment for which the country had been waiting for years. Behind this historic victory was a name who never played for India himself, but made Team India the world champion, Amol Majumdar.
Under the coaching of Amol Majumdar, the Indian women’s team did something which was never possible before. In 2005 and 2017, India reached the finals, but could not win the title. This time coach Majumdar’s passion and dedication with the players bore fruit. He not only worked on the technical shortcomings of the players but also instilled in them confidence and hunger for victory.
Amol Majumdar had performed brilliantly in domestic cricket. He scored more than 11,000 runs in 171 first class matches and scored 30 centuries. Despite this, he never got a chance to play in the Indian team. After retiring from cricket in 2014, he made coaching his new goal. Working with teams like Netherlands, South Africa and Rajasthan Royals, he established himself as an intelligent and calm coach.
When she was given the command of the Indian women’s team in October 2023, many people raised questions on her. But he silenced all the critics with his work. Despite the first three defeats during the World Cup, he did not let the morale of the team fall.
After the loss to England, Majumdar told the players that you could have easily won this match. After this he strengthened the team mentally. Harmanpreet Kaur told that before the semi-finals the coach wrote just one line on the whiteboard that we just want more runs from them. This simple sentence filled the players with enthusiasm. The brilliant innings of Jemimah Rodrigues reflected that confidence.
After defeating South Africa in the final, when the entire stadium was immersed in celebration, Amol Majumdar stood quietly with tears in his eyes. This was the biggest moment of his life. His dream had come true. Harmanpreet Kaur touched his feet and hugged him at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, which became the most beautiful picture of respect and gratitude towards him.
