Now the days of spammers and scammers are about to end. Soon any person calling with fake identity or fake name will not be able to hide his identity, because your mobile itself will reveal the real information of that caller. Now the trial of a new technology called Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) has started in India, through which mobile users will be able to see the real name of the caller without third party apps like True Caller.
This initiative has been launched under the direction of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India. Under this service, if a call comes from a number which is not saved in your phone, then the real name of the person or organization which is registered with that mobile number will appear on the screen. This is expected to effectively stop crimes like fake calls, fraud, and cyber fraud.
According to the report of Economic Times, the trial of CNAP service has currently been started in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh circles. Major telecom companies like Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and BSNL are testing this service in Haryana, while Bharti Airtel has started testing it in Himachal Pradesh circle. After successful trials, there are plans to implement it in the entire country next year.
The purpose of this technology is to eliminate the problem of spam and scam calls which are increasing rapidly across the country. Every day such complaints come to light that people calling using fake names or fake IDs have cheated or harassed common citizens. Apps like True Caller reduced this problem to some extent, but these apps do not always show accurate information and many questions were raised regarding user privacy. With the implementation of CNAP, this information will come directly from the mobile network, so that the data will not be misused and complete transparency of the caller identity will be maintained.
According to telecom experts, CNAP technology will not only increase the security of users but will also give impetus to the government’s ‘Digital Safety Mission’. Once this facility is implemented across the country, mobile users will know even before picking up the call, under which name the call is coming from the registered person or institution. This is expected to significantly reduce the number of calls to cyber crime, banking fraud and fake investment schemes.
According to reports, during the CNAP trial, users will see the name of the caller along with the number when they receive a call on the mobile screen. For example, if a call comes from the customer care of a bank, a name like “State Bank of India” will appear on the caller ID. Similarly, if a call comes from a private person, the call will be identified by his registered name.
However, experts say that before implementing this service, telecom companies will have to solve some technical and privacy challenges. Keeping call data secure and maintaining privacy of users’ information will be the primary condition for its successful operation.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked all major telecom operators to be part of this project. The Ministry has also given instructions to ensure that user data will not be shared with any third party when the CNAP service is implemented.
CNAP is being considered in the industry as a major step forward in India’s digital security framework. This can prove to be a big relief for mobile users because after the introduction of this facility, they will get relief from frequent spam calls, fraud and fake promotional calls.
If the trial is successful, CNAP service may be available across India by early next year i.e. 2026. This service will bring a historic change in the field of mobile communications and will include India in the list of countries where calling transparency has been legally implemented.
Cyber security experts say that CNAP will not only increase digital trust, but this step will prove to be another strong step towards making India a secure digital ecosystem. In the coming times, CNAP service can act as a “digital security shield” for mobile users.
