Serious pollution situation in Delhi

Delhi: The level of air pollution is continuously increasing in the national capital. On Saturday morning, the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached above 400 in many areas, putting Delhi once again in the ‘red zone’. Due to this pollution, citizens are facing problems like difficulty in breathing, irritation in eyes and sore throat.

AQI figures and reasons

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, AQI was recorded between 430 and 460 in areas like Anand Vihar, Punjabi Bagh, ITO and Rohini. Experts believe that pollution is increasing in North India due to stubble burning, cold winds and smoke emanating from vehicles.

Delhi government action

Taking this situation seriously, Delhi Government has implemented the third phase of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Under this scheme, instructions have been given to ban construction works, ban outdoor activities in schools and strict monitoring of diesel vehicles. Along with this, people have been appealed to reduce the use of private vehicles and resort to public transport.

Health experts warn

Health experts have warned that this level of pollution should take special precautions for the elderly, children and people with asthma or lung diseases. It has been advised to wear masks, use air purifiers indoors and avoid morning walks.

Environmentalists’ predictions

Environmentalists believe that if weather conditions do not improve, Delhi’s AQI may reach the ‘severe category’ in the coming days.
