Baidu unveils AI chips to reduce reliance on US tech

Baidu, China's leading technology company, has unveiled two new artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors.

The move comes as a response to the growing US-China tech tensions and export restrictions on advanced AI chips.

The new chips are part of Baidu's strategy to provide powerful yet cost-effective computing power for Chinese companies.

M100 and M300 chips

Baidu unveiled the new chips, dubbed M100 and M300, at its annual Baidu World technology conference.

The M100 is an inference-focused chip that will be launched in early 2026.

The more advanced M300, which can handle both training and inference tasks, is set to hit the market in early 2027.

These developments highlight Baidu's commitment to advancing AI technology amid global trade challenges.

To clarify, training an AI model involves teaching it to recognize patterns in large datasets.

On the other hand, inference is when these trained models are used to make predictions or respond to user queries.

Along with the new chips, Baidu also unveiled two supernode products.

These cutting-edge devices use advanced networking technology to connect multiple chips, compensating for individual chip performance limitations.

This innovative approach is similar to Huawei's CloudMatrix 384, which uses 384 Ascend 910C chips and is considered more powerful than NVIDIA's GB200 NVL72.

Tianchi256 and upgraded Ernie LLM
Product launch

Baidu's Tianchi 256, which will consist of 256 P800 chips, is expected to launch in H1 2024. A more powerful variant with 512 chips will be launched in H2.

The company also unveiled an upgraded version of its Ernie large language model (LLM), which excels at text processing as well as image and video analysis.

These developments further cement Baidu's position as a leader in AI technology.
