If these rules are ignored, one may have to face troubles instead of auspicious results. Let us know the important rules for installing Shivalinga in the house, which every Shiva devotee must know.

Size of Shivling: No bigger than the tip of the thumb

  • A big Shivling should never be installed in the house.
  • Rule: According to religious beliefs, the Shivalinga kept in the house should not be bigger than the tip of the thumb.
  • Reason: It is believed that controlling the energy of the big Shivalinga and following the strict rules of regular puja is difficult at home, whereas it is possible in the temple.
  • Best Shivling: Shivling made of mercury or Narmada river stone is considered best for the home.
  • Direction and Location: Install in North East
  • The direction and location of Shivalinga are very important.
  • Direction: Shivling should always be installed in the north-east corner (Ishaan corner) of the house. This direction is considered most auspicious for worship.
  • Jaladhari (the place where water is filled for Abhishekam): The Jaladhari or Jaladhari of Shivling should always be towards the north direction. Remember, the Water Bearer should never be crossed.
  • Sanctity of place: Shivalinga should be installed only in the place of worship. Never keep it in the bedroom, kitchen or any other unclean place in the house.

Should we not make these mistakes even by mistake?

  • Multiple Shivalingas: Not more than one Shivalinga should be installed in the worship place of the house.
  • Pran Pratistha: One should not perform Pran Pratistha of the Shivalinga installed in the house. This is for temples and major rituals. Shivling should be worshiped at home without consecration of life.
  • Broken Shivling: A broken or damaged Shivling should never be kept in the house. Immerse it immediately in running water.
  • Turmeric or vermillion: Never apply turmeric or vermillion tilak on Shivling. Only sandalwood tilak should be applied.
