Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has successfully completed the deployment of 1 lakh 4G sites across India with support from a TCS-led consortium that includes Tejas Networks and C-DoT. The achievement marks a major milestone in BSNL’s network expansion, particularly in remote and previously unconnected regions.
Saurabh Mittal, Chief Product Officer – Core Technologies at TCS, said the company has deployed these 4G sites using indigenous technology, with a strong focus on saturation areas and far-flung locations.
According to company executives, the project has now moved into the “operation transition” phase. The initial order of 1 lakh sites has been delivered, and any further expansion will depend on approvals from BSNL and the central government. A cabinet decision will determine the scale and pace of the next rollout.
The deployment includes coverage in regions such as Chhattisgarh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Ladakhand other underserved zones. Importantly, BSNL’s 4G sites are upgradable to 5Gallowing a smoother transition whenever the device ecosystem and demand evolve.
While the 1 lakh sites form a strong foundation, they are not yet enough to serve the entire Indian telecom market. The next expansion phase—expected to include both wider 4G coverage and 5G upgrades—will be crucial and requires swift government clearance.
