Jasprit Bumrah Overtakes Mohammed Shami: Jasprit Bumrah bowled 14 overs for India and took five wickets for 27 runs in the first innings of the ongoing first Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. With this, Jasprit Bumrah has left Mohammed Shami behind in terms of Test wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly and took 5 wickets and restricted South Africa to 159 runs. With the help of these five wickets, the number of wickets of Jasprit Bumrah has increased to 231. Whereas Mohammed Shami has only 229 test wickets. Bumrah has overtaken Shami in terms of wickets in Test cricket.
Shami has played 64 Tests for India and dismissed 229 batsmen. Anil Kumble holds the record for taking most wickets for India in Test matches. Kumble played 132 Tests for India from 1990 to 2008 and took 619 wickets. He is followed by Ravichandran Ashwin (537), Kapil Dev (434), Harbhajan Singh (417), Ravindra Jadeja (338), Ishant Sharma (311), Zaheer Khan (311), Bishan Singh Bedi (266), Bhagwat Chandrashekhar (242) and Javagal Srinath (236).

Bumrah opened his bowling account on Friday by dismissing Ryan Rickleton. This left-handed opening batsman was bowled by the world number 1 Test bowler. Rickleton had added 23 runs in 22 balls to South Africa’s total score. After this, Jasprit Bumrah also sent Aiden Markram to the pavilion. This right-handed batsman had scored 31 runs in 48 balls, when Rishabh Pant showed him the way to the pavilion through a brilliant catch behind the wicket.
Bumrah took the third wicket of Tony De Georgi. Tony de Georgi was out LBW by Bumrah. After that Bumrah completed his five wicket haul by taking the last two wickets. Bumrah took his last two wickets in the 55th over of South Africa’s innings. He bowled Simon Harmer (5) on the third ball and had Keshav Maharaj caught in front of the wickets on the sixth ball.
Bumrah’s five-wicket haul on Friday (November 14) made him the first fast bowler in 17 years to dismiss at least five batsmen on the first day of a red-ball match played in India. The last fast bowler to take at least five wickets on the first day of a red-ball Test in India was South Africa’s Dale Steyn.
