X replaces DMs with 'Chat' feature: What changes for users?
15 Nov 2025

X (formerly Twitter) has launched a new 'Chat' feature, replacing its basic direct messaging (DM) service.

The update brings voice and video calls, file sharing, and the option to edit or delete messages after sending. It also includes privacy-focused elements like end-to-end encryption.

The revamped Chat feature is now available on iOS and web platforms, with Android support coming soon.

X's Chat feature: A step toward enhanced security
Security concerns

X has been teasing its new Chat feature for some time now.

Earlier this year, the platform introduced an early version of encrypted messaging but had to "pause" it in May due to unspecified issues.

According to a post on X's help center, "unlike before, group messages and media can now be encrypted." However, metadata (information about the recipient) remains unencrypted.

To use the feature for the first time, users have to set up a four-digit PIN code.

X does not offer 'protections against man-in-the-middle attacks'
Encryption details

X has also warned users that it "does not offer protections against man-in-the-middle attacks," which could compromise an encrypted chat.

The company explains, "As a result, if someone—a malicious insider or X itself as a result of a compulsory legal process—were to compromise an encrypted conversation, neither the sender or receiver would know."

However, X is working on features to help users verify the authenticity of their encrypted conversations.
