The Indian keeper-batter KL Rahul had reportedly declined captaincy in the Delhi Capitals while he came from the Lucknow Super Giants. Even though he never clarified the reason, it seems like the LSG experiences might have haunted him. KL was caught inappropriately in a verbal spat after LSG suffered a 10-wicket defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Even though KL was the one listening, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka was aggressively speaking to him.
In many interviews, he has indirectly targeted the incident. And this time, in an interview with the famous Sports presenter Jatin Sapru, KL Rahul opened up, giving a broader perspective. KL attended Sapru's Humans of Bombay show, where he revealed how mentally challenging it is to lead a franchise in the Indian Premier League.
Even though he never mentioned a team or an owner, he compared how franchise cricket is different from international cricket. He felt that it is easier to explain the uncertainty of the sport to the coaches and selectors, as they have already played the sport. However, it is unlikely to the team owners, especially when they have hardly touched a bat or a ball. Speaking to Sapru, KL said,
"There are so many things. Coaches, captains, you’re just constantly being asked a lot of questions, and after a point, it almost feels like you’re being questioned as to why did you made this change. Why did Jatin play in the XI? Why is it that the opposition got 200 and we couldn’t even get 120? Why are their bowlers getting more spin?"
He added,
"I mean, these are questions that we never get asked through the year, right? Because the coaches who are there know what’s going on. You’re only answerable to the coach and the selectors who’ve all played cricket and understand the nuances of cricket and sport. No matter what you do and how many boxes you tick, there’s nothing in sport that guarantees victory. So that’s the hard part to explain to people who come from a non-sporting background."
Currently, he is with the Delhi Capitals, and the franchise retained him for the 2026 session despite rumours of him going to the Kolkata Knight Riders. KL is presently touring with the Indian team as an opening batter for the Test side, but against South Africa. His next assignment is the second Test of the ongoing series at Guwahati on November 22.
