New Delhi: Electric vehicles are gaining popularity across India, with more brands launching new models and the government pushing cleaner mobility. But despite this rapid shift, petrol cars are not going away anytime soon. In fact, they continue to dominate Indian roads because of several practical, technical, and financial advantages that still matter to everyday buyers.
Yes, it’s true that EV has more features and they are tech rich as compared to petrol cars while petrol cars are more reliable than EV in terms of various factors and also cheaper in price. However if we talk about their resale value, again petrol is ahead of EV. There are also multiple reasons why EV can not replace Patrol vehicles. Here’s a simple breakdown.
Petrol is extremely energy-dense. A small amount can power a car for long distances, while EVs need large, heavy batteries to match that range. This weight difference makes petrol cars more efficient, especially for long trips. Hatchbacks cars like Swift, Santro and even Alto can be driven on bad roads while you must be conscious while driving an EV.
Patrol stations are everywhere
Petrol pumps are available everywhere, including cities, towns, villages, and along highways. EV chargers are increasing in number, but they are still far fewer and harder to set up, especially in rural areas. Even if an organisation wants to install a charging station, supplying stable electricity in remote locations is a major challenge. In comparison, a petrol pump needs only a tanker to refill its storage. This makes petrol far more convenient and universally accessible for most drivers.
Fast refueling
Filling up a petrol tank takes just two minutes. Even the fastest EV chargers take longer. For people who travel frequently or hate waiting, petrol remains the quicker and easier option.
More efficient then before
New petrol engines are smarter and use fuel more effectively. Technologies like turbocharging, start-stop systems, and mild hybrids help increase mileage while keeping performance strong. This makes petrol cars economical even with rising fuel prices.
Hard to recycle
Recycling old EV batteries is complex, expensive, and still developing in some countries. Petrol vehicles, by comparison, have a simpler maintenance and recycling ecosystem. Until battery recycling becomes smoother, petrol cars remain practical.
Batteries make EVs expensive. Petrol cars remain more affordable upfront, which matters for a large group of car buyers who are buying their first or second vehicle. Lower purchase cost keeps demand high.
