Davis Cup star Dan Evans once threatened to quit the Great Britain team after feeling 'insulted' by a selection decision. The singles regular made this explosive revelation in 2022 after being snubbed for the doubles.

Evans, who was part of the victorious British team in the 2015 Davis Cup, was so disgruntled about not being selected for the doubles he hinted he would refuse to represent his country in the legendary team tennis event. He dismissed the argument his lack of regular doubles action on the tour was a factor.

Speaking to the i, he said: "It's disappointing. To be frank, it's a bit insulting also that I haven't been picked ever to play the Davis Cup [in doubles].

"This is meant in the nicest possible way to the doubles guys - there's nothing against them - but I don't need to play doubles on the tour to prove how good I am at doubles. When I do, I normally do okay.

"I think we need to look past doubles rankings for a Davis Cup tie and if a game style fits or a game style doesn't then maybe we should be picking other people."

His comments came after his omission from the doubles at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals in Austria, where he was restricted to singles action only as captain Leon Smith paired Neal Skupski and Joe Salsbury in the doubles rubber. Evans said: "I had the conversation [asking to play] in Austria. I played with Neal before for a year to try and play Davis Cup, and didn't get picked. I'm at a loss as to why I've never played.

"It's frustrating, as I said, and a bit insulting as well. It's something I have to think about going forward if I want to put myself in that position again to keep going there and we're not getting the right results.

"Maybe I should have a conversation and sit down, and if he [Smith] wants to go a different way then it's entirely up to him. He's the captain."

Evans finally got what he wanted the following year when he and Skupski claimed victory in their doubles rubber during the away clash with Colombia. Although Evans was beaten in his opening singles encounter, Britain triumphed 3-1 to secure their spot in the Davis Cup Finals. However, Evans was forced to miss the 2023 finale after suffering an injury.

The 2025 Davis Cup Finals are taking place without Britain following their 3-2 defeat to Japan in the opening qualifying round. On Wednesday, Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led host nation Italy into the semi-finals in Bologna. The defending champions are without their top two players, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, but they still had too much quality for Austria.

Former Wimbledon runner-up Berrettini gave Italy the perfect start when he defeated Jurij Rodionov 6-3 7-6 (4) and Cobolli sent them through to a last-four showdown against Belgium by beating Filip Misolic 6-1 6-3.
