New Delhi: ChatGPT is widely used for assignments, project help and quick explanations. Until now, each person had to chat with the AI separately, even when working on the same task, like for example college students doing group assignments or some kind of office task. OpenAI has now added a new feature called group chats, which lets multiple users talk to ChatGPT together in one conversation.

This feature is available to everyone, including people using the free version. OpenAI also says that only the replies written by ChatGPT will count towards rate limits. This means all group members can send as many messages as they want without affecting the limit, as long as ChatGPT is not replying each time. What are ChatGPT group chats?

Group chats let several users join one shared conversation with ChatGPT. Everyone can send prompts and ideas in the same chat window. The AI will read the whole discussion and respond based on the messages. Each reply is created by GPT-5.1 Auto, which chooses the best model depending on the context. Group chats do not mix with your personal chats, so whatever you talk about privately will stay separate.

How to start a group chat

To begin, open any chat with ChatGPT, new or old doesn’t matter then tap or click the small people icon. You can then add up to 20 members to the group. After you send someone an invite, ChatGPT will automatically create a new group chat. It doesn’t impact your personal chat with the AI. Once everyone joins, the group can start working on projects, sharing notes, planning trips or doing assignments together.

How ChatGPT replies in a group

OpenAI designed ChatGPT to react differently in group settings. Which means the AI will not reply to every message. Instead, it will follow the flow of the conversation and join in only when it thinks a response is needed. If users want a direct answer, they can type “ChatGPT” in their message to call the AI. As a result it shows the minimal contribution of AI in chat. However if the user wants to experience more fun, ChatGPT can also react to messages with emojis. If asked, it can even create personalised images based on someone’s profile picture.
