FIFA has replaced the poster for the 2026 World Cup with a new one that prominently features superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, after the original sparked debates for leaving him out.
The initial poster, posted on Nov. 19 to represent the 42 qualified teams, caused widespread controversy as Ronaldo was left out and Bruno Fernandes was chosen to represent Portugal. The omission was seen as strange given the presence of other top stars like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.
“Why did FIFA post a poster of the World Cup but didn’t include the greatest player in history?” a fan wrote. “They don’t want Ronaldo. Is it normal for a player who broke unbelievable records and raised the level of world football to be absent in this poster?”

A few hours after receiving criticism, FIFA deleted the poster.
The new poster, posted by FIFA on Nov. 20 with the caption: “What is your favorite moment at the 2022 World Cup?”, focuses on memories from the last tournament.
In the new poster, Ronaldo appears to be celebrating his penalty goal against Ghana in the group stage, his only goal in Qatar. The poster also highlights Messi lifting the trophy, Mbappe’s volley in the final, and Luka Modric wearing his bronze medal.
Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be his last. This would mark a record sixth World Cup appearance for the 40-year-old star, while his rival Messi has not confirmed his participation.
The 48-team tournament will take place in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
