
New Delhi, 22 November. Justice Surya Kant will take oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday (November 24). On this occasion, Chief Justices and Higher Judiciary Judges of Bhutan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Brazil will be present at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

CJI-designate, Justice Surya Kant, while speaking to the media at his residence office on Saturday before taking oath, said his priority would be to deal with pending cases and promote mediation.
Asked that there are more than 90,000 pending cases in the Supreme Court and it would be difficult to resolve them with the old methods, Justice Surya Kant replied, ‘I am very optimistic….’ He is not only focusing on the pending cases in the Supreme Court but also wants to reduce the pending cases all over India, be it High Court or District Court.

Justice Surya Kant said that he will focus on identifying those pending cases in the Supreme Court, due to which cases are pending in the High Court and District Court. He will also investigate the pending old case. He said it is a good practice for those filing cases to first approach the High Court and then the Supreme Court. People need to understand that High Courts are also constitutional courts.

“Secondly, my priority would also be to focus on mediation as one of the ways to reduce pendency, which could be a ‘game changer’,” Justice Kant said. He said that mediation, which has gained momentum, is a very powerful tool and one of the easiest solutions to pending matters.
He said that some multinational companies and banks have appealed to the Supreme Court to provide mediation training to their officers for in-house mediation. He said that mediation culture should be promoted in government institutions also.
