Health Corner: Irregular fasting and frequent eating habits after festivals can be harmful for people suffering from diabetes. About 72 million people in India are affected by diabetes, and this number is likely to reach 134 million by 2025. In such a situation, diabetic patients need to take special precautions while enjoying festivals.
Diabetes Educator Chetna Sharma said that for people suffering from diabetes, it is necessary to eat something at regular intervals to keep blood pressure under control. During festivals, they can definitely eat a little more, especially after fasting. However, consumption of unhealthy and calorie-rich food and irregular eating habits can have negative effects on health.
He further added that apart from hypoglycemia, it can cause postprandial hyperglycemia, ketoacidosis and other metabolic problems. Not drinking enough water can lead to problems like dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and hypotension.
Sharma suggested that after fasting, eat food which is not heavy on digestion. Processed foods and trans fats should be avoided as they can affect sugar levels. One should keep consuming beverages like coconut water, lemon water and milk during the day.
Choose complex carbohydrates
Choose fiber-rich foods and complex carbohydrates, which will keep you satiated for a longer period of time, he said. Monitor sugar levels regularly to avoid hypo or hyperglycemia. Keep eating small amounts of food every two hours.
Take a post-assessment test
Chetna Sharma advised that it is important to undergo a post-assessment test after fasting. Do not miss taking medications or insulin doses regularly and consult your healthcare provider as needed. Keep drinking water during the fast and monitor blood sugar regularly. Drink fluids like coconut water, green tea, buttermilk and lemon juice and avoid aerated drinks.

Eat fruit yogurt instead of sweets
He said that do not consume excessive snacks during fasting, because they contain high amount of salt and sugar. Instead, eat boiled or roasted foods. Use rock salt instead of table salt, as it helps with mineral absorption. Use dates or fruit yogurt instead of sweets and use honey instead of sugar.
