New Delhi: India has made significant progress in mobile and electronics manufacturing and has become the second largest mobile manufacturing country in the world. In the year 2014, there were only 2 mobile manufacturing units in India but today there are more than 300 manufacturing units in the country. According to the official statement, Make in India mobiles are now being adopted worldwide and more than 63 lakh phones are being produced every week.
According to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, in 2014–15, only 26% of mobile phones sold in India were made in India, the rest were imported. It is noteworthy that today 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are made in India. The production value of mobile phones in financial year 2014 was Rs. 18,900 crore to Rs. 18,900 crore in financial year 2024. 4,22,000 crores.
In fact, Make in India, launched in 2014, is an important step in India’s nation building efforts. This initiative was conceived at a time when India’s economic growth had declined sharply and the country was facing serious challenges in sustaining its growth trajectory. Against this backdrop, “Make in India” was designed to transform India into a global hub for design and manufacturing. Its main objectives were to facilitate investment, promote innovation and develop world-class infrastructure.
Let us tell you that, “Make in India” initiative has been the cornerstone in transforming India into a global manufacturing hub. By focusing on enhancing industrial capabilities, promoting innovation and creating world class infrastructure, the initiative aims to position India as a key participant in the global economy. In this sequence, India produces more than 325 to 330 million mobile phones every year and on an average one billion mobile phones are used in India. Live exports in 2014 have now crossed Rs 1,29,000 crore.
The Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP) was announced in 2017 to promote local value addition in the production of mobile phones and its sub-assemblies/parts. The objective of the scheme is to encourage mass production and create a strong local manufacturing eco-system for mobile devices. As a result, India has started attracting more and more investment in this sector and significant production capacity has been established in the country. Mobile phone production is continuously moving from semi knocked down (SKD) to completely knocked down (CKD) level, due to which local value addition is gradually increasing.
Not only this, the expansion of this sector has also been the main source of employment, due to which about 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs have been created in the last decade. These employment opportunities have not only raised the economic status of many families, but have also contributed to the socio-economic structure of the country.
