A grandfather was crushed to death against a wall as he tried to stop a 4x4 utility truck rolling back on a remote Welsh island, an inquest heard. Christopher Lamont, 63, of Bridgnorth, Shropshire was transporting luggage for visitors to Ynys Enlli, Gwynedd, when the tragic accident occurred in June last year.
Mr Lamont, nicknamed "Lofty", had been helping visitors arriving on the island by boat, driving luggage to holiday cottages. His daughter Jodi Jarvis told an inquest in Caernarfon: "He went to Wales to get away from it all. It was his retreat, and he sought sanctuary there. Dad loved helping out." One of the visitors who was staying on the island told how Mr Lamont had parked the vehicle as he went to shut a gate to a field.
Malcolm Hastings added that the truck began to roll back slowly and Mr Lamont ran towards the back of it "with both hands up as if trying to stop the vehicle".
He added: "The back of the vehicle has then crushed him against the wall. It was shocking to see what happened."
Witnesses were able to move the vehicle before an Air Ambulance and coastguard helicopter arrived on the scene, which sits nearly two miles off the Llyn Peninsula.
However, despite the best efforts of first responders, Mr Lamont succumbed to his injuries caused by the crush.
North West Wales senior coroner Kate Robertson said it couldn't be established whether the handbrake had been applied.
However, she did identify "defects" with the handbrake, which likely led to the vehicle rolling, although it couldn't be determined when they arose, nor could it be established whether the handbrake had been applied.
Mr Lamont's daughter said: "I know this was a tragic accident. I don't wish for anyone to be prosecuted."
The tiny island, which measures just a mile long, is known as the "Island of 20,000 Saints", with local myth describing it as the final resting place of thousands of pilgrims.
The island has been a place of pilgrimage since the 6th century and is currently home to a working farm, thriving lobster and crab fishery, a Bird Observatory, and some spectacular wildlife, including over 200 Atlantic grey seals, a growing population of Manx shearwaters, and the much-loved red-billed chough.
