On Wednesday, South African spinner Simon Harmer etched his name in the record books by becoming the leading wicket-taker for his nation in Test cricket while playing in India. This milestone was reached following South Africa's impressive 408-run victory over India in the second and final Test held in Guwahati, resulting in a 2-0 series whitewash against the Asian team.
Throughout the two-match Test series, Harmer emerged as the standout player for South Africa. He claimed 27 wickets at an impressive average of 15.03 and a strike rate of 36.1. Among the 109 bowlers with at least 20 Test wickets in India, Harmer boasts the best average and strike rate. In the second Test, he delivered a match-winning performance, taking nine wickets, which contributed to South Africa's second-largest victory margin, following their 492-run win against Australia in Johannesburg in 2018.
After being awarded Player of the Series, Harmer commended his team's efforts in securing a series win against India. He also praised Aiden Markram's excellent slip catching. "As I mentioned in the last Test, it has been a long journey. A decade later, the feeling is entirely different. Beating a strong Indian team is a tremendous achievement. I noticed during our second innings that after 40 overs, the ball softened, making it easier to bowl. However, there were still challenging deliveries, like the one that got Rishabh. It was gratifying to contribute, take wickets, and achieve a five-wicket haul in India. We anticipated a tough fight from them in the second innings, but we knew that if we bowled in the right areas, we would see results," Harmer stated during the post-match presentation.
Harmer's six-wicket haul in the second innings propelled South Africa to a record-setting 408-run victory in the second Test. India struggled to chase down the 548-run target, getting bowled out for just 140 runs. In their first innings, South Africa scored 489 runs, while India managed only 201, with Jansen taking six wickets. The visitors declared their second innings at 260/5d, setting a daunting target that India could not meet, resulting in their defeat and series loss at home.
This defeat marks India's second home series whitewash under head coach Gautam Gambhir, following a 0-3 loss to New Zealand last year and now a 0-2 defeat against South Africa within two years.
Match Summary: India: 201 and 140 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 58, Ravindra Jadeja 54, Simon Harmer 6/37) vs. South Africa: 489 and 260/5d (Tristan Stubbs 94, Senuran Muthuswamy 109, Ravindra Jadeja 4/62).
