Mikel Arteta finally ended Arsenal’s horrific run against Bayern Munich in style, with a great second-half performance. The manger's brave decisions paid off in the end, with his substitutes doing the business at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal took the lead through a set piece again, as Bukayo Saka’s corner kick found the head of Jurrien Timber. Lennart Karl then found the net after a ball over the top to Serge Gnabry perfectly found the youngster.

Arsenal began the second half well and were knocking on the Bayern door with Mikel Merino having several good chances. Cristhian Mosquera also tested Neuer before Declan Rice’s shot was stopped by the German’s toes.

Finally, they broke the German champions down with the two substitutes Riccardo Calafiori and Noni Madueke combining as the latter tapped in at the back post. Then a big Manuel Neuer clanger saw Gabriel Martinelli skip past to find an open goal waiting for him.

Here is how football.london rated the performances of the Arsenal players:

David Raya – Could do very little about the goal with Karl given most of the goal to aim at from close range. Had little else to do throughout the game as Arsenal again were dominant at the Emirates. 6

Jurrien Timber – The Dutchman rose highest in the box to give the Gunners the lead from a corner. Came close to finding Madueke with a headed cross from the right and spent the second half terrorising Bayern’s left-hand side. 9

William Saliba – Was turned inside out by Harry Kane in the first half, but his recovery speed helped him deal with the situation well. Didn’t put a foot wrong after that and finished strongly. 7

Cristhian Mosquera – Came very close to giving the Gunners their second after a Declan Rice free-kick bounced through to him. Held the defence strongly, and Harry Kane was almost invisible. 7

Myles Lewis-Skelly – Slightly caught out by the run of Michael Olise behind him for the equaliser, a worryingly familiar type of error. Also beaten by Olise in a one-on-one that had to be saved by Declan Rice, which was not ideal with Thomas Tuchel watching. 5

Martin Zubimendi – Was so good again at conducting the midfield and found some excellent passes in behind, especially to Timber in the first half. The Spaniard continues to stand out on the biggest stage for his work in this midfield. 8

Declan Rice – A driving force as usual in midfield, and the England international had a great run into the Bayern box that nearly ended in a big chance. Two great deliveries to Mikel Merino and Cristhian Mosquera should have been scored. He could have scored himself were it not for the toes of Neuer after an amazing drive toward goal. Was a monster in the middle of the park, especially in the second half. 9

Eberechi Eze – Had a great chance to give the Gunners a second, but got his shot all wrong, which should have been taken on his left. Found the pass to Calafiori before his cross in the second goal. The pass over the top to the waiting Martinelli set up the third goal on the night. Another important evening for the man in form. 9

Bukayo Saka – Perfectly curled corner kick into the danger zone, where Manuel Neuer had no chance to meet it. Was gifted a great chance by Kimmich but denied but the fingertips of Neuer. 7

Mikel Merino – Produced some nice quick-touch passes and combinations. Had a chance fall to him from a corner but skewed his effort high and wide. Then saw two-headed chances fail to hit the back of the net, the first straight into the arms of Neuer, the second flicked wide of the right post. 7

Leandro Trossard – Had to be replaced in the first half after receiving a knock. Remained relatively quiet through the first half. 6

Substitutes

Noni Madueke – Came close to finding the net from a Timber cross. He moved to the right hand side when Saka left the field and within seconds had his first goal putting it in after Calafiori’s cross. 8

Gabriel Martinelli – Coming after a lengthy time of absence on the left-hand side. A first touch of dreams past Manuel Neuer allowed the Brazilian space in behind and an open net to finish into. 7

Riccardo Calafiori – Replaced the struggling Myles Lewis-Skelly. He must have been on the field for seconds before finding the cross for Madueke to score the second. 7
