There are some amazing offers with cheap holidays this winter.
If you're looking to flee the cold for warmer climes or get in a cosy snow-filled city break before the end of winter, there are plenty of budget options to check out this season.
With low-cost airlines flying from all around the UK, and new routes being added each season, it's a great time to explore Europe and North Africa within a short flight distance. Here are some of the best budget city breaks for winter.
The biggest city in Morocco remains a cost-effective warm-weather escape for those looking to leave behind gloomy winters. With temperature highs of 18°C - 21°C and lows of 6°C - 9°C, there's little need for your big coat here.
Some of the best sites lie around the Medina and the busy Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. It's a great place to shop, find bargains, and admire incredible architecture and history. Head to the Jardin Majorelle for stunning natural beauty and to learn more about local Indigenous culture, or visit the Bahia Palace for out-of-this-world architecture and opulence.
Budget carriers fly from all around the UK direct to Marrakech during the winter. These include London from £27 return, Liverpool from £28, Manchester from £32, and Glasgow from £40.
Combine this with low-cost, traditional Riad-style accommodation, and Marrakech is an excellent budget escape.
Sunny Spain is a popular option for UK snowbirds looking to thaw out during the winter, and Seville is a top contender. Home to flamenco, oranges, and beautiful Moorish architecture, it has a little something to suit every traveller.
In January, you can get return flights from London as low as £28, Birmingham from £38, Manchester from £50, and Edinburgh from £54.
You can expect temperatures between 6°C and 16°C, so it's pretty mild for exploring the incredible historic sights, and indulging yourself in tasty tapas and bitter orange flavours.
As Seville is a major Spanish city, you can find plenty of budget hotels and hostels for under £50 per night, especially during winter, so it's an ideal wallet-friendly city break that's still packed with things to do.
3. Turin, Italy This Northern Italian city is a relatively new addition to budget carrier's flight schedules, and it's about time! With incredible museums, the stunning snow-capped Alps in the background, and, of course, outstanding Italian cuisine, there's a lot to love here.
Turin is definitely more affordable than other major Italian cities like Rome, Milan, or Venice, and there's the added benefit of being close to the mountains, if you do want more of a budget ski or mountain escape.
Alternatively, explore the incredible cultural and historical sights, like the Egyptian Museum, the National Cinema Museum, or the Palazzo Reale di Torino.
Return flights to Turin from the UK start from as little as £28. You can find direct routes from regional airports, including Bristol, Liverpool, Birmingham, Belfast, Manchester, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Newcastle, and Glasgow.
2. Brno, Czechia For too long, when budget travellers have thought of Czechia, they've only thought of Prague.
While the capital has plenty to recommend itself, the second city of Brno should be on everyone's radar this winter.
If you're into interesting architecture, laid-back vibes, and a student-centric, walkable city, then Brno is going to be right up your street.
Foodies will love the excellent wine culture, while history buffs can explore the incredible medieval Špilberk Castle.
Return direct flights to Brno can be found from London airports for as little as £31. This is also an ideal location if you want a classic, winter, romantic, European city break.
Temperatures in January range from 2°C to -4°C, so you'll need layers, and expect mistings of snow across the iconic red rooftops of the city.
1. Poprad, Slovakia One of the hardest-to-find budget breaks is a ski trip. Combine this with a ski break close to a city, and you have an almost mythical location. Emphasis on almost. Poprad in Slovakia is a city in the High Tatras Mountains near the border with Poland.
This incredible city with a 13th-century church also has access to the mountains with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and horse-drawn carriage rides through wintry forests, all of which are accessible on the outskirts of the city.
For downhill skiing and snowboarding, you'll need to go to Tatranská Lomnica ski resort. This is either a 20-minute drive from Poprad, or a 55m train ride with one change. There's also a direct FlixBus that goes three times a day, taking 26 minutes, and has prices from just £3.99 one way.
Flights from London to Poprad start from £32 return in January with WizzAir.
