JEE-NEET in 11th Class: The central government is preparing to make significant changes to reduce students' increasing dependence on coaching. A central committee formed to address this issue has discussed several important suggestions that could transform the entire system of examinations like JEE, NEET, and CUET. The most surprising proposal is to conduct these competitive exams in 11th grade instead of 12th grade. Suggestions include restricting coaching hours and integrating board exam scores into admissions.
In fact, the 11-member committee, which met on November 15th, discussed the increasing academic pressure on students, the coaching culture, and the declining role of school education. The committee acknowledged that today, students spend five to six hours in coaching classes after school, which not only impacts their mental health but also hinders their schooling.
JEE-NEET exams may be held in the 11th grade
The most important proposal before the committee was that national-level entrance exams like JEE, NEET, and CUET be held in 11th grade. Members believe this will reduce the excessive pressure on 12th grade and allow students to decide their career path a year earlier. However, a final decision on this will be made only after the school board syllabus is matched. NCERT has been tasked with comparing the syllabus with CBSE and state boards.
Exams may be held twice a year.
The committee also suggested that entrance exams be held twice a year, i.e., in April and November. This proposal is in line with the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020). This will provide students with two opportunities in a single year and reduce the pressure of a single exam.
Time Limits on Coaching
Another major suggestion is to limit the duration of coaching classes to a maximum of 2 to 3 hours daily. Currently, most students spend 5 to 6 hours after school, leaving them mentally and physically exhausted. Setting a time limit will help students balance their studies and personal life and strengthen the role of schools.
Board Exams and Aptitude Tests Should Be Given Weightage
The committee also considered that in the future, admission to IITs, medical, and other higher education institutes should not rely solely on a single competitive exam. Instead, a hybrid model should be adopted, giving weightage to both board exam scores and aptitude tests. This will strengthen schools' internal assessment systems and prevent students from relying solely on coaching.
Dummy Schools and a Weak Education System are Also a Concern
The meeting also expressed concern over issues such as the increasing prevalence of dummy schools, uneven teacher quality, weak formative assessment, and the lack of career counseling in schools. The committee believes that unless the school education system is strengthened, the dependence on coaching cannot be eliminated.
At present, all these proposals are at the discussion stage. The committee will submit its final recommendations to the government after reviewing the syllabus and studying other aspects. If these suggestions are implemented, the admission process for IITs, medical institutions, and other prestigious institutions could change drastically in the future, providing students with some relief from the hassle of coaching.
