Lando Norris could sensationally pull a Nico Rosberg and quit Formula One if he secures the world championship title this weekend. The McLaren star is sitting on 390 points in the Drivers' Championship and can clinch his first-ever world title with a win in the Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday.
Things would have been easier for the Brit had he and teammate Oscar Piastri not been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix for a technical infringement. Both McLaren drivers lost their points - and Norris a podium place in second - due to the rule break which allowed race winner Max Verstappen to close in on Piastri in the standings. However, Norris is still leading the pack and admitted in August that he could follow Rosberg and retire as F1 champion.
Speaking at the Dutch Grand Prix, the 26-year-old said: "It is sometimes good to go out when you've won like Nico. Just one championship. You don't have to do anymore. You achieved a little goal and go and live an amazing life."
When questioned further on his plans for the 2026 season, Norris smiled and said: "I don't know. Maybe. I might not be here next year. You never know."
The comparisons to Rosberg are clear, after the Mercedes driver made the decision to bid farewell to F1 just five days after winning his first and only world championship title. At the time, the German said: "For 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my 'one thing' to become Formula One world champion.
"Through the hard work, the pain, this has been my target. And now I have made it. I am on the peak, so this feels right."
The story seems to be repeating itself in an eerie way for Norris. Rosberg battled with an ex-teammate - Lewis Hamilton - and a Red Bull driver, Daniel Ricciardo, for the title. In 2025, the Brit is fighting McLaren star Piastri and Red Bull man Verstappen for his own dream.

With a win in the Qatari Sprint and Grand Prix, Norris could realise his lifelong dream - and also potentially ride off into the sunset.
