29 Nov 2025

In a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), two-time MLA and party vice-president of Delhi, Rajesh Gupta, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The announcement was made on Saturday, just a day before the bypoll election in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva welcomed Gupta into the party fold and draped him with a BJP stole.

Gupta, who was also the national spokesperson of AAP, broke down while joining the BJP.

He slammed AAP's "use and throw" approach toward workers, alleging that Arvind Kejriwal didn't value his hard work and loyalty.

"Despite my years of sincerity, honesty and loyalty...the party president wasn't even ready to talk to me," he said.

Gupta further alleged that many prominent people who joined AAP when it was founded were "betrayed" by Kejriwal.

He claimed the party gave a ticket to someone in the Ashok Vihar ward who has been issued a notice by AAP itself.

"Today, unfortunately, I have also joined that list," he said while announcing his switch to the BJP.

Sachdeva also slammed AAP for staying mum over the shortcomings in Delhi during its 12-year rule while questioning the eight-month-old BJP government.

He said Gupta had carved a niche for himself as a responsible MLA but was not appreciated by Kejriwal.

The development comes ahead of the MCD bypolls, where AAP will face off against the BJP for 12 vacant wards on Sunday, November 30.

Despite the high-profile exit, the AAP is yet to issue a statement on Gupta's departure.
