Sara Cox has revealed that she often tells her children that she's "sorry" as she discussed a particular family concern. Sara, who recently completed an epic five-day, 135-mile marathon challenge for Children in Need, recently opened up about motherhood and how she managed to balance it with her career.

Sara has three children: a daughter, Lola Anne, with her ex-husband, DJ Jon Carter, and a son and daughter, Isaac and Renee, with her husband, the advertising executive Ben Cyzer, whom she married in 2013.

A BBC Radio 2 drivetime host, the Bolton native first sought a career in modelling prior to her move to broadcasting, landing roles on Channel 4's The Girlie Show, MTV and The Big Breakfast.

In a recent interview, Saraopened up about the fears she had for her job when she initially went on maternity leave, revealing that she found it "unsettling" and was left wondering what her career would "be like afterwards".

Sara told The Times Magazine : "When you first go on maternity leave, it's unsettling. You wonder what your career will be like afterwards. Luckily, when I had my two younger children I was with my husband, Ben, and had a great support system.

"I was able to get back to work, but you always feel like you have taken a couple of steps back. I often say to the kids I am sorry I am not there, I am sorry I missed that, but they know what I do.

"I hope they won’t have to have therapy in the future because they had an absent mother."

It comes shortly after Sara raised the astonishing sum of more than £11 million (as of November 24) for Children in Need through her gruelling charitychallenge, which was the equivalent of five marathons.

Beginning her trek in Kielder Forest, Northumberland, on November 10, the radio star journeyed across four counties in an arduousmission that ended on Friday, November 14, in Pudsey, West Yorkshire.

Once she completed the trek, Sara, whose challenge was the longest-ever taken on by a Radio 2presenter, admitted that it was the "hardest thing" she'd ever undertaken. She made the comments to Scott Mills on Radio 2, noting how she's now an "honorary Yorkshirewoman".

Sara added: "It's just the hardest thing I've ever done - I've never known pain quite like it. But then, I've never had eye contact with so many amazing women who have just powered me on.

"On the side of the road, in the driving rain, it was bitterly cold. The truck drivers honking their horns, the farmers stopping work just to come and say hi. Thanks to everybody who let me stop for a wee at their house - it was a few people."
