Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made a statement that has created a stir in the developer community. Zuckerberg has said that over the next 12 to 18 months, much of the code for the company’s Llama project will be written using AI. He believes that AI is not only performing like an average engineer, but will soon surpass even the top coders.
In a podcast interview, Zuckerberg explained, “AI can autocomplete code very well today, but I’m not talking about that level. I’m talking about AI that, with a goal in mind, can run tests on its own, find bugs, and write high-quality code, better than the average, good engineer.”
Zuckerberg said that Meta is working on a coding agent and an AI research agent that will be used specifically for research and development of the llama AI model. “We’re not an enterprise software company, so we’re building this tool for our own use. Our goal is not to create a general developer tool, but to create an AI agent that integrates fully into our toolchain and helps us drive Llama forward,” he said.
Mark Zuckerberg has commented on this topic before. He had said that soon all Metai apps and the AI code in them will be written by AI engineers, not by human engineers. He believes that AI is already powerful enough to replace mid-level software developers.
