There is a tiny village with just 250 residents that has one of the most magnificent (and haunted) castles in the United Kingdom. Throughout the year, there are beautiful villages in the UK that make for excellent staycations. Visiting a small village is a completely different trip from visiting one of the country's major towns or cities, especially around Christmas time when high streets swell with festive shoppers and tourists.
If you are looking for something a bit more relaxed when it comes to a break away from it all, then there is one UK village that makes for a great time, even though you might not have heard of it before. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and home to a spectacular castle with fascinating history, this tiny village has a certain charm that isn't too often found nowadays. This tiny village is called Chillingham, and it's located in Northumberland in the North East of England.
Chillingham is most well-known for Chillingham Castle, which is considered Britain's most haunted castle. Dating back to the 13th century, this Grade 1 listed fortress is rich in history and lore.
In medieval times, it sat on the border of two battling nations, watching many conflicts unfold throughout the decades. Centuries later, it has welcomed royalty who stayed there whilst travelling through. Today, it is a well-reviewed tourist attraction, especially for history buffs.
Meanwhile, visitors have reported a slew of paranormal activity over the years, and it remains a go-to destination in Britain for fans of all things supernatural. You can visit Chillingham Castle for a day, or you can stay there overnight.
While Chillingham Castle takes most of the spotlight for those visiting the village of Chillingham, there are plenty of other things to attract you to this area. In terms of pubs, there are a few cosy ones that make for a nice, relaxing evening after a day of exploration.
Just down the road in the slightly larger town of Chatton is the Percy Arms Hotel, which is home to a gorgeous pub. Meanwhile, there is also The Joiners Arms, which is a popular spot for locals.
On the castle grounds, you'll find a lovely garden to wander around as well as a rare breed of cattle. In fact, they are the only wild cattle left in the world, and are descended from herds that once roamed the forests of Britain.
Chillingham Castle has received rave reviews from those who have been there. One tourist wrote on TripAdvisor: "Chillingham Castle does not disappoint! We felt like we could have been on a film set for a period drama."
Another said: "Complete peace and quiet, something that is very, very difficult to get in 2025. Absolutely, wonderful and will be coming back!"
Chillingham is located in a scenic part of the North East of England. This British county is known for its rolling countryside landscapes and its scenic (and dramatic) coastline. Staying in the castle is an experience in itself, but it's also a great gateway to the rest of the area.
Chillingham is located just 20 minutes away from the coast of Northumberland. You'll be in a great spot for exploring the Northumberland Coast Path, which is a hit with visitors who appreciate hiking with amazing views.
You also won't be too far away from Northumberland National Park, which boasts some of the best natural scenery in the entirety of the UK.
