Actually, many messaging apps including WhatsApp will have to follow the central government’s new Telecommunications Cyber ​​Security Amendment Rules 2025. According to the new rules issued by the Department of Telecommunications, it will be necessary for every WhatsApp account in the device to have an active SIM card continuously connected. The government has now classified WhatsApp as a new TIUE. That means, like telecom companies, it will also have to follow the rules to security and identity verification.

Mandatory SIM binding is the main basis of the new rule, that is, WhatsApp will have to constantly verify whether the SIM card with which the account is created is active in the phone or not. WhatsApp will stop working if the SIM is removed or changed from the device or is turned off. Additionally, WhatsApp Web will also auto-log out every six hours. Users will have to log in again by scanning a new QR code.

Telecom Department officials say that this step will go a long way in preventing cyber criminals from working anonymously. This will go a long way in preventing online fraud, fake identity and scams. Under the new rules, other messaging platforms including WhatsApp will have to implement this system within 90 days.
