A week ago, Kamal Haasan had announced that Sundar C will be directing Rajinikanth in a new production — the superstar’s 173rd project — from the former’s RaajKamal Films International. However, Sundar C has now issued a statement that he won’t be going forward with it.
In a statement, the Aranmanai 4 maker said: “It is with a heavy heart that I share some important news with you. Due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances, I have made the difficult decision to step back from the prestigious project #Thalaivar173. This venture, featuring the legendary Superstar Thiru. Rajinikanth Avl and to be produced by the illustrious Ulaghanayagan Thiru. Kamal Haasan Avl, was indeed a dream come true for me.”
Sundar C sees this as one of those “moments when we must follow the path laid out for us, even if it diverges from our dreams.” Thanking the two superstars, he added that his association with them goes way back and that he will continue to hold them in the “highest regard” and will seek their “expert guidance” for his future committments.
The Anbe Sivam director concluded his note by offering his apologies to those are disappointed with this unexpected development.
The project was planned to be release in time for Pongal 2027, through an association with Red Giant Movies. It’s not yet clear if a different filmmaker will step in or if it will be completely dropped.
Meanwhile, rumours are also circulating about a project starring both Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, with director Nelson’s (Jailer, Doctor) name attached.
