Domestic LPG consumption in India is continuously creating new records. According to the latest data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the Energy Ministry, domestic LPG consumption in the country has reached 31.3 million metric tons (MMT) in the year 2024-25. This is not only a sign of increasing consumer demand, but also a major testament to the nationwide shift towards clean and safe cooking energy.

Data: LPG consumption in India has increased almost three times in the last two decades. This consumption was 10.2 MMT in the year 2004-05, which increased to 16.3 MMT in 2013-14. But the biggest jump was seen in the last decade, where consumption increased to 31.3 MMT by 2024-25. That means it has more than doubled compared to 2013-14.

Why increased consumption?

The Modi government of the country has started many schemes in recent years to promote LPG connections, due to which the connections have increased and consumption has also increased. The biggest scheme in this is Ujjwala Scheme. Through this scheme, a large number of rural and economically weaker sections were connected to LPG. Second, the supply chain of LPG in the country has become stronger than before. Availability of refills has become easier due to increased refinery capacity, larger warehouses and better distribution networks.

LPG prices reduced

There is an increase in consumption due to availability of gas at low rates. Although there has been no change in the prices of domestic gas cylinders this month, the prices of commercial gas have definitely decreased. According to IOCL, the price of 19 kg commercial gas cylinder has been reduced by Rs 10 in all four metros from the first of the month. Commercial cylinders have become cheaper for the second consecutive month.

After the cut, the cylinder price in the country's capital Delhi became Rs 1,580.50 and in Kolkata it became Rs 1,684. On the other hand, commercial gas cylinders in Mumbai and Chennai have reduced by Rs 10.5. After which the prices of commercial gas cylinders in both the metros have become Rs 1,531.50 and Rs 1,739.50.
