India has more than 1.2 billion smartphone users and 95 crore internet users. Cheap internet rates (Rs 12 per GB) and cheap smartphones have rapidly taken the country into the digital age, but this internet addiction is ruining the young generation. Easy availability of internet is also making Indians addicted to mobile phones.

According to a report by global management consultancy EY, Indians are spending more time on their smartphones than ever before. The report shows that Indians spend an average of 5 hours per day on social media, gaming and video streaming. The report also revealed that for the first time, digital platforms have overtaken TV, making it the largest segment of India’s media and entertainment industry.

Out of every five hours spent by Indians, 70% are spent on social media, video streaming and gaming. According to an EY India report, this change represents a “digital inflection point”. He said, “With the increasing influence of digital media, we will see a sea of innovations, new business models and partnerships.”

In terms of screen time, India ranks third after Indonesia and Brazil. The total time spent on mobile screens by Indian users is projected to reach 1.1 trillion hours by 2024, making India the world’s largest digital market. In this growing market, big companies like Meta, Amazon, Mukesh Ambani and Elon Musk are increasing competition.
