His short spell of three overs destroyed the opposition batting order. He took five wickets. His performance helped Mumbai to a one-sided victory in the match.
Batting first, Sarfraz Khan’s brilliant century saw Mumbai pile up 220 runs. Chasing a target of 221, Assam looked tired from the start. The entire team managed to score only 122 runs and Mumbai won the match by 98 runs. Along with the batsmen, the Assam bowlers have also been ineffective.
Shardul Thakur ruined the start of Assam’s innings. He didn’t even let Danish Das crack the pumpkin on the very first ball of the innings. He then also dismissed Abdul Qureshi for just four off the third ball. Then on the fifth ball, Assam captain Rian Paragla was also dismissed for a wicket by Shardul. Thus, Shardul Thakur blunted Assam’s lead in the first over.
Coming in for the second over, Shardul sent Sumit back for just one run. The Assam batsmen looked completely helpless in front of him. Five players from the opposing team could not even reach double figures. Shardul Thakur took 5 wickets for just 23 runs in 3 overs and changed the course of the match.
After the opening partnership between Ayush Mhatre and Ajinkya Rahane in the match against Assam, Sarfaraz Khan scored a brilliant century with the bat. He hit an unbeaten 100 off 47 balls. Sarfaraz hit 8 fours and 7 long sixes in his innings.
Mumbai strengthened their foundations with crucial partnerships with Ajinkya Rahane for the second wicket and skipper Suryakumar Yadav for the third wicket. Due to Sarfraz’s explosive innings, the team managed to build a huge score in 20 overs. As a result Assam could not survive against Thakur’s elemental bowling and lost by 98 runs.
Shardul Thakur now IPL 2026 will be seen playing for Mumbai Indians. MI bought him from Lucknow Super Giants and played for LSG last season. He took 13 wickets in 10 matches with Shardul for LSG. His return is said to have strengthened Mumbai’s bowling attack.
