Pulses have a special place in Indian food and among these, arhar dal is considered to be the most popular. Rich in protein, iron, fiber and essential minerals, this lentil is considered beneficial for health. According to doctors, pigeon pea plays an important role in providing energy to the body, strengthening the digestive system and building muscles. But experts also warn that in some health conditions this pulse can prove harmful.


Purine is found in pigeon pea, which can increase the level of uric acid in the body. In such a situation, consumption of pigeon pea can be risky for people who have problems with arthritis or uric acid. Doctors say that a diet rich in purines increases pain, swelling and stiffness in joints in arthritis patients. Therefore, patients suffering from this problem should eat pigeon pea in limited quantities or as per the doctor’s advice.


Apart from this, people who have kidney diseases should also be careful while consuming pigeon pea. In case of weak kidneys, high-protein food can put extra stress on the body. Such patients have to control their protein intake and pigeon pea being rich in protein can cause problems for them. Patients on dialysis should also consume pulses under the supervision of a doctor.


Pigeon peas can also increase the problem of gas and acidity. People who have a weak digestive system, or suffer from frequent acid reflux, indigestion or flatulence, may feel uncomfortable eating pigeon pea. Experts recommend that such people should choose light and easily digestible pulses, such as moong dal or masoor dal, instead of pulses.


Diabetic patients should also consume pigeon pea in balanced quantities. Although this lentil is considered a low-glycemic food, excessive consumption of carbohydrates and proteins present in it can cause fluctuations in sugar levels. Therefore quantity control is very important for diabetic patients.


In some cases, pigeon pea may also cause allergy. If symptoms like skin rashes, stomach ache, vomiting or difficulty in breathing appear, consumption of pulses should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted.


Experts clearly believe that pigeon pea is an important part of a nutritious diet under normal circumstances. But if a person has arthritis, kidney disease, digestive problems or is allergic to lentils, then it should be consumed with caution, or not at all. Pulses should always be selected based on the body condition and under the guidance of an expert, so that there is no harm instead of benefit.
