New Delhi: Indian cricket team’s emerging fast bowler Harshit Rana proved to be a little hasty in the first ODI match against South Africa in Ranchi. Due to a gesture made after dismissing Dewald Brevis, the ICC has punished him considering it a violation of the code of conduct.
Rana had performed well in Ranchi, but his aggressive behavior after taking wickets has become a cause of trouble for him. In such a situation, ICC has taken action against him and punished him.
The 22nd over of South Africa’s innings was going on when Harshit Rana bowled Dewald Brevis. In celebration of getting the wicket, he pointed towards Brevis, which meant “Go now.” This action was deemed by the ICC as “batsman-provoking behaviour”. Thus, this was considered a breach of Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct, which prohibits players from engaging in abusive behavior after being dismissed.
The ICC issued an official reprimand to Harshit Rana and added 1 demerit point to his disciplinary record. The good thing is that this was the first violation for them in the last 24 months. He immediately admitted his mistake, so no formal hearing was held. Punishment options for ICC Level 1 offenses range from a warning to a fine of 50% of the match fee and 1-2 demerit points. This time Rana got the lightest punishment.
Despite the punishment, Harshit Rana’s performance was excellent. He took 3 important wickets for 65 runs in 10 overs, which included Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickleton and Dewald Brewis. Thus, he played a decisive role in India’s victory.
India won the first ODI against South Africa by 17 runs, taking a 1–0 lead in the series. The second match is going to be played in Raipur.
