New Delhi: Team India batter Virat Kohli notched up his 53rd ODI hundred in the second match against South Africa at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday, December 3.
He smashed a match-winning hundred in the first ODI in Ranchi and picked up from where he left off, scoring a 90-ball century with the help of seven boundaries and two maximums. His knock was complemented by a swashbuckling hundred from Travel Giikwadwho completed his maiden ton in the format in his eighth outing.
Shortly after Gaikwad fell on 105 runs, Kohli reached to his landmark ton in the over after India were asked to bat first on a batting pitch. Kohli extended the record-breaking milestone from his previous century, moving four tons ahead of Sachin Tendulkar in the ODIs.
His 84th international century is also only behind Tendulkar’s 100 tons and 26 ahead of the next active player, Joe Root (58). He averages nearly 70 against South Africa in ODI format, which is the highest among the six batters who have aggregated at least 1500 runs against them.
Kohli’s century only comes a day after he confirmed his availability for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi, the premier domestic 50-over tournament in the country.
