Liverpool have backed out of their plans to go after Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck who was a potential January target.
The German is thought to be on a list of players on the club's radar but, for now, the Reds will not move for him. Schlotterbeck is being tipped for a move given his contract expires next season and the Bundesliga outfit may be keen to recoup some kind of fee.
Bild is now reporting that Schlotterbeck is ‘not their top priority’ as Liverpool hold off on making any approach. The Reds have been linked with several defensive targets, owing to their own struggles and their failure to land a defender in the summer despite their best efforts.
Jarell Quansah was allowed to leave for Bayer Leverkusen and Ibrahima Konate will be out of contract in the summer. He doesn't appear close to signing an extension amid talk of a move away - although one destination has been ruled out with Real Madrid not considering a move, according to reports.
The Reds pushed hard to land Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace with his contract expiring once this campaign ends. The Eagles pulled the plug on any move on deadline day to leave Liverpool somewhat light in that department.

They could return in the summer whilst they will eventually get Giovanni Leoni back with the summer signing going down with a serious ACL injury. Schlotterbeck, despite his potential availability, doesn't look to be the man for Liverpool at present with Bayern Munich also linked.
The 25-year-old was reportedly reluctant to sign a new deal in Dortmund, despite a wage increase and him inheriting the captain's armband, but head coach Nico Kovac continues to hold out hope that the centre-back will choose to extend his stay with the club.
"I don't know to what extent I can influence things there – other than showing him appreciation. I show him that every day. He knows what we have in him. But he also knows what he has in the club. I'm optimistic, but only time will tell. I'm not a fortune-teller. Let's wait and see."
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl added: "We are trying to provide conditions that offer Schlotti an attractive environment. Ultimately, a decision will have to be made."
