A suspected toxic gas leak in the Kenduadih area of Dhanbad, Jharkhand, has triggered panic across several villages, leaving two women dead and more than a dozen residents hospitalised since Wednesday evening. The affected zone falls under the coal-mining belt of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL)where officials are now scrambling to identify the source and nature of the gas.

The deaths of Priyanka Devi on Wednesday and Lalita Devi early Thursday have intensified fear among locals, with residents claiming that “gas exposure” caused the fatalities. Authorities, however, have maintained that the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after post-mortem reports.

Evacuation begins; thousands affected

Reports indicate that thousands of residents across Kenduadih Basti, Rajput Basti, Masjid Mohalla, and Officer Colony — an area with an estimated population of 10,000 — are experiencing the impact of the toxic fumes. BCCL has begun evacuating families residing near the suspected leak point.

Local accounts suggest that 15–20 people have fallen sickwith symptoms including vomiting, breathlessness and sudden collapse. One resident told ANI that Lalita Devi was “foaming at the mouth” before being rushed to hospital.

Protests erupt on highway

Tensions escalated on Thursday morning as angry villagers blocked the Dhanbad–Ranchi highwayburning tyres and demanding immediate relocation. The blockade continued for nearly four hours before officials managed to pacify the crowd and initiate discussions.

Residents blame administration for negligence

Villagers allege that authorities have long ignored warnings about toxic emissions and unstable ground conditions in the coal belt.

Local resident Shaikh Mohammad said, “For years they have issued only notices. No alternative accommodation was ever provided. The gas has spread across the entire area, and people are continuously falling ill.”

BCCL and district officials have begun examining underground mine workings and ventilation shafts to trace the source of the suspected gas.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged residents to stay away from low-lying pockets until the area is declared safe.
