Raipur. South Africa defeated India by four wickets in the second ODI (IND vs SA 2nd ODI 2025). On Wednesday, in the match played at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, the Indian team, who came to bat first, scored 358 runs for five wickets in 50 overs with the help of centuries from Virat Kohli and Rituraj Gaikwad. In response, South Africa scored 362 runs for the loss of six wickets in 49.2 overs with the help of Aiden Markram’s century and half-centuries from Matthew Britzke and Dewald Brewis and won the match. With this win, the guests leveled the three-match ODI series with India 1-1. Now both the teams will face each other in the last and decisive match on December 6 in Visakhapatnam.
This is South Africa’s third highest run chase in ODIs. Earlier in 2016, the team had won the match against Australia by scoring 372 runs. Before that, the team had won against Australia in 2006 by scoring 435 runs. With this, South Africa has now registered three successful run chases of 350 or more runs, which is the highest with India in this format.
Kohli-Gaikwad and Markram included in this special list
In this match, two batsmen from India and one from South Africa played century innings. Ruturaj Gaikwad (105) and Virat Kohli (102) played century innings for the hosts. At the same time, Aiden Markram (110) scored a brilliant century for the guests. This is the third time in the ODI matches played between India and South Africa when three batsmen played century innings. Earlier in 2015, Quinton de Kock, Faf Duplessis and AB de Villiers had scored centuries. Before that, in the clash held at Johannesburg ground in 2001, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Gary Kirsten had played century innings.
Kohli’s 84th century in international cricket, Gaikwad’s first century
Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal were out cheaply for India, but Kohli and Rituraj made a comeback for India by making a partnership of 195 runs for the third wicket. Rituraj scored the first century of his ODI career and after this Kohli also scored the 53rd century of his ODI career.
This is Kohli’s 84th century in international cricket. Kohli had already become the batsman with the most centuries in any format of international cricket and now he has further strengthened this record. Kohli has gone far ahead of everyone else in terms of scoring centuries in ODIs. The record of scoring most centuries in international cricket is in the name of Sachin Tendulkar who has scored 100 centuries. In the second match, Kohli was out after scoring 102 runs in 93 balls with the help of seven fours and two sixes. At the same time, Rituraj managed to score 105 runs in 83 balls with the help of 12 fours and two sixes.
Virat and Rituraj returned to the pavilion after playing century innings. After this, KL Rahul (66*) and Jadeja batted strongly in the last overs due to which India’s score crossed 350. Jadeja remained unbeaten after scoring 24 runs. For South Africa, Marco Jansen took two wickets, while Nandra Berger and Lungi Ngidi got one wicket each.
Markram’s first century as an opener
South Africa’s chase of 359 runs started with a shock. Wicketkeeper batsman Quinton de Kock was out cheaply. After this, Aiden Markram and captain Temba Bavuma took charge. There was a century partnership between the two for the second wicket, which was broken by Prasidh Krishna in the 21st over. He got Bavuma caught by Harshit. He returned to the pavilion after scoring 46 runs.
Matthew Britzke, who came to bat after Bavuma, supported Markram well and made a partnership of 70 runs for the third wicket. Harshit Rana made Markram his victim. He returned to the pavilion after scoring 110 runs in 98 balls. This is Markram’s fifth century in ODIs and his first as an opener, which he completed in 90 balls.
Against India, Britzke scored 68, Dewald Brevis scored 54, Tony De Georgi scored 17 (retired hurt) and Marco Jansen scored two runs. At the same time, Corbin Bosch remained unbeaten on 29 runs and Keshav Maharaj remained unbeaten on 10 runs. For the hosts, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna took two wickets each while Harshit Rana and Kuldeep Yadav took one wicket each.
