Understanding International Cheetah Day

International Cheetah Day is observed annually on December 4th, aiming to promote awareness about the conservation of cheetahs. Recognized as the fastest land animals, cheetahs face significant threats to their survival. The day was initiated by Dr. Laurie Mark in 2010, coinciding with the birthday of a cheetah named Khayyal, highlighting the urgent need for their protection.

Cheetah Population in India

Currently, India is home to 32 cheetahs, with 19 of them born within the country. Presently, these magnificent creatures can be found in only two locations, with plans to expand their habitats in the future. The two wildlife sanctuaries housing cheetahs are located in Madhya Pradesh, where cheetah safaris are available at one of the sites. Kuno National Park is home to 30 of the 32 cheetahs, while the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Mandsaur hosts the remaining two.

Main Cheetah Spots in India

Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh

The inaugural cheetah safari in India commenced in 2025 at Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh. Cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa were rehabilitated and released into this sanctuary. With the recent birth of five cubs, the population has grown from 27 to 32. Visitors can witness these animals in their natural habitat, making Kuno National Park the premier destination for experiencing cheetahs in the wild.

Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, Madhya Pradesh

Another significant rehabilitation center for cheetahs is the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh. Plans are underway to relocate some cheetahs from Kuno to this sanctuary. As a potential future tourist destination, Gandhi Sagar aims to support cheetah conservation and may soon welcome visitors for cheetah safaris.
